I finished a satisfying season managing Middlesbrough at Sky Bet Championship, and I noticed that my left wing-back, Mitchell Dijks (29 yrs), was my top scorer this season. He is not my penalty taker and the only penalty he attempted (and scored) was in the last game, when I noticed that he was my top scorer. submitted by saintree to footballmanagergames [link] [comments] First, a picture of his attributes: Attribute of my top scorer (6 finishing, 4 long shots, 12 heading) His stats this season are as follows: 18 Goals and 6 assists over 26 league apps (6 subs), 2 assists over 5 league cup apps, 13.2 Km covered per game (most in team was an AP at AMC position with 13.3 Km, third in team was an WBR with 13.1 Km. They are the only ones covering 13+ Km per game.) My team was never lacking on the attacking side, scoring a total of 94 goals over 56 games and lifting both the league and the league cup: Team statistics Now it's time to show my tactics: A high-line pressing play, with the alternative tactic moving the AMC forward to a TM Now this is what I had in mind when I started clipping screenshots, i.e., some amazing anomaly to show off on reddit. But my curiosity drove me into an investigation, which turned out to be very amazing. Bear with me. Having decided to conduct an investigation, the first step is naturally to find all games where he scores. Hold tight, here comes the bombardment of games! (Due to the limit of amt. of pictures allowed in a post, I will only show the beginning, the end, and some key matches with an accumulative goal count--that is why the total goal count seems skipping) 1 Goal (Cumulative: 1) 1 Goal (Cumulative: 2) 2 Goals (Cumulative: 4) 3 Goals (Cumulative: 10) 2 Goals (Cumulative: 12) 2 Goals (Cumulative: 16) 2 Goals (1 pen) (Cumulative: 18) Then, I proceeded to analyze his matches, hoping to explain why a WBL with 6 finishing, 4 long shots, and 12 heading are able to pull off a season like this. The first match I reviewed was a 5-0 win over QPR: Blue arrow: dribbles; arrows towards goal: goals and attempts; horizontal arrows: crosses completed, received (greenish) or intercepted (orange); green dots: interception and tackles As shown above, the position of my wing back (support role) was surprisingly high, with average position around the middle line (not shown). In this match, Dijks scored 3 goals, with another attempt saved. On the defensive end, Dijks made a total of 12 tackles/interceptions combined without 1 failed attempt. He had 242 touches throughout the game, making him the most popular passing target in my team. Another game in which he performed well was a 3-0 win over Sheffield United: Blue arrow: dribbles; arrows towards goal: goals and attempts; horizontal arrows: crosses completed, received (greenish) or intercepted (orange); green dots: interception and tackles; red dots: failed interception and tackles Again, the position of my wing back (support role) was high, with average position around the middle line (not shown). In this match, Dijks scored 2 goals, with another 4 missed attempts. On the defensive end, Dijks made a total of 9 tackles/interceptions combined and 4 failed attempts. He had 187 touches throughout the game, again making him the most popular passing target in my team. Now, 1-2 defeat by the Potters, a game to forget: Blue arrow: dribbles; arrows towards goal: attempts; horizontal arrows: crosses completed, received (greenish) or intercepted (orange); green dots: interception and tackles; red dots: failed interception and tackles In this game, the attacking performance of Dijks was lackluster, with 2 shots saved, 1 missed, 2 intercepted crosses and 1 completed cross. It is worth noting that even though he was not productive, he had 3 shots (my team had 10. in comparison) in the game. Defensively, he is still sound, with 9 combined interceptions/tackles and 1 failed attempt. What about games that my team had to withstand pressure from a stronger side? A first example would be a lucky 1-0 counter-attack win away at Old Trafford in the EFL cup semifinal: Blue arrow: dribbles; Red dot (attacking third): one blocked attempt; horizontal arrows: crosses completed, received (greenish) or intercepted (orange); green and yellow dots: interception and tackles (yellow being key tackles); red dots: failed interception and tackles Dijks was against Álvaro Odriozola (RB) and Leon Bailey (AMR) this game. He was virtually non-existent on the attacking third, with 1 blocked shot, 1 completed cross and 3 intercepted crosses. However, he really shined on the defensive end, with 11 tackles (3 key tackles), 2 interceptions and 2 failed interception attempts. His 7.1 rating (goalscorer got 8.3, followed by 2 center-backs with 7.2) indicated his importance in this game. (P.S. Dijks still had most touches in the game.) Then there is the final against Liverpool: Blue arrow: dribbles; horizontal arrows: crosses intercepted (orange); green and yellow dots: interception and tackles; orange dot: blocked shot; red dots: failed interception and tackles Dijks was against Alexander-Arnold (RB) and Mohamed Salah (AMR) this game. He had 1 missed shot, 1 saved shot, and 2 intercepted crosses in this game--again, very inconsequential. But he again did his job on the defensive end, with 6 interceptions (most in game), 1 block, 3 tackles (second-most in game), 1 missed tackle and 1 missed interception throughout the game. His 197 touches was again, the most in game. Finally, I looked at some of the ordinary matches, a win and a draw: https://preview.redd.it/iv1yvby1a4e51.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=ac6f8dc251a2275dac1ffea90fa907aa717376da https://preview.redd.it/k1wpcvy1a4e51.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=95f0e50398e90f0f89f96e404656c93268a4238f Dijks did not score in either of the games, and received an average rating (6.9 in both), but he was active on the attacking third, defensively sound, and had most touches on the team. After a look at all these games, I have formulated a hypothesis: Dijks is a WBL on a team with no wingers, making him a core of possession when counter-attacking; he was given sufficient amounts of chances to shoot when cutting inside and at set-pieces (he did have impressive heading attribute for a wing back); and his 14 work rate and 14 stamina supported his role well. Over the season, he covered a total distance of 424 Km (13.2 Km per 90 minutes), and was given 91 attempts to shoot, third only to my two strikers (having 100 and 115 chances, respectively). The above and a little help from the FM God and voila, a top goalscorer is born. Another thing I have found: ANALYZING GAMES IS SO DAMN FUN! This is my first attempt at analysis, so please roast me :) And here is a question for you: knowing that he is only good as a sub for mid-table premier league teams, should I keep him and offer him a raise (knowing that my team will outgrow him in 2-3 years), or should I sell him while his estimated value is sky-high (11.25 M)? |
